Collagen Peptides Explained: What the Research Actually Shows
Collagen peptides have become one of the most searched supplement categories in Australia — turning up in skincare routines, protein shakes, and joint-health conversations alike. But between glowing marketing claims and genuine clinical research, it can be hard to know what's actually backed by evidence. Here's a grounded look at what the science currently shows.
What the Research Shows
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body, and it plays a central role in skin firmness, elasticity, and hydration. As collagen production naturally declines with age, this is understood to be one of the key drivers behind visible skin changes such as wrinkling, sagging, and reduced firmness (Skin Aging and Type I Collagen, 2025).
Collagen peptides — produced by breaking collagen down into smaller, more easily absorbed chains — have been studied fairly extensively for skin-related outcomes. A systematic review and meta-analysis of ten randomised controlled trials involving 646 participants found that collagen-based supplements produced statistically significant improvements in both skin hydration and elasticity, with 4 grams per day being the most commonly studied dose (Effects of Collagen-Based Supplements on Skin's Hydration and Elasticity, 2025). A separate meta-analysis of 19 studies involving over 1,100 participants similarly found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation improved skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle appearance, with benefits generally emerging after around 90 days of use (Effects of Hydrolyzed Collagen Supplementation on Skin Aging, 2021).
Collagen peptides have also been studied outside skincare. A systematic review of 15 randomised controlled trials examining collagen peptide supplementation alongside exercise found it was most beneficial for improving joint functionality and reducing joint pain, with some additional improvements observed in body composition and muscle recovery (The Effects of Collagen Peptide Supplementation on Body Composition, Collagen Synthesis, and Recovery from Joint Injury and Exercise, 2021).
What's Still Unclear
Despite this substantial body of research, the picture isn't entirely settled. Study quality and dosing vary considerably across the field — sources of collagen (bovine, marine, porcine, chicken), doses, and supplementation periods differ widely between trials, which makes it difficult to point to a single "proven" protocol (Collagen Supplementation in Skin and Orthopedic Diseases, 2023).
More importantly, a recent meta-analysis specifically examined whether funding source influenced study outcomes. It found that studies not funded by pharmaceutical or supplement companies showed no significant effect of collagen supplements on skin hydration, elasticity, or wrinkles — while industry-funded studies did show significant effects. The same pattern held for study quality: high-quality studies showed no significant benefit across these measures, while lower-quality studies did (Effects of Collagen Supplements on Skin Aging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis by Funding Source, 2025). This doesn't mean collagen peptides don't work — but it's a meaningful reason to treat headline marketing claims with some caution.
Reviewers have also noted that despite growing interest, the overall evidence for oral collagen supplementation remains heterogeneous, and more independent, high-quality trials are needed to confirm effect sizes and identify which populations benefit most (Dietary Collagen Supplementation as a Strategy for Skin Health, 2026).

Regulatory Status in Australia
Collagen peptides are generally regulated in Australia as a food or dietary supplement rather than as a therapeutic good, meaning they don't go through the same TGA evaluation and ARTG listing process as prescription medicines or scheduled substances.
