GHK-Cu in Australia: What the Evidence Shows
GHK-Cu has one of the longer research histories of any compound in this space — but the way it's increasingly discussed today doesn't always match the form that history is actually built on.
What Is GHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring tripeptide — three amino acids (glycine, histidine and lysine) bound to a copper ion — first isolated from human plasma in 1973 (Pickart & Thaler, 1973, foundational identification). It occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine, with circulating levels that decline with age (Pickart & Thaler, 1973).
What the Research Shows
GHK-Cu has decades of established use in topical cosmetic formulations aimed at skin and wound care, supported by a substantial published literature going back to the 1970s (Pickart & Thaler, 1973). More recent research has also examined the compound in animal models for other applications, including a 2023 study looking at skeletal muscle pathways (Deng et al., 2023).
What's Still Unclear
There are currently no published human studies examining GHK-Cu given by injection. This is a meaningful gap: the way a compound behaves when applied topically to skin is not the same as how it behaves when introduced systemically, and the two evidence bases shouldn't be treated as interchangeable.
Copper in particular is known to accumulate in the liver over time. This is a pharmacokinetic question that has been well studied for dietary and topical copper exposure, but has not been studied for injected use of this specific compound — leaving a genuine unknown about how injected GHK-Cu would be processed and cleared by the body over repeated use.
Regulatory Status in Australia

Established topical use and untested injectable use are two very different evidence pictures, even though they share a compound name.
